Gustav Nyquist scored a pair of goals, Andreas Athanasiou added a third goal in the mix, and the Detroit Red Wings shutout the San Jose Sharks 3-0 at Joe Louis Arena on Saturday night.

The Sharks played the Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena one last time.

Each team killed four minutes of penalties in the first period — Thomas Vanek was called for interference, Joe Pavelski was called for interference, Brenden was called for boarding, and Darren Helm was called for delay of game with a faceoff violation.

The Red Wings outshot the Sharks 11-6 through 20 minutes of scoreless hockey.

Gustav Nyquist gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead at 4:14 of the second period with a wrist shot from the left circle which beat Martin Jones top shelf on his short side.

Nyquist made it 2-0 Red Wings at 15:10 with his second goal of the night and his third of the season.

Marc Edouard-Vlasic went to the box for tripping at 17:31. Then, Nyquist was called for holding, which led to 27 seconds of 4-on-4 hockey.

Brent Burns’ shot hit the goal post with less than a second left, but the referee declared no goal. The Red Wings led the Sharks 2-0 after 40 minutes. They continued to outwork their opponent, outshooting them 20-18.

Thomas Vanek made a tremendous pass to set up Andreas Athanasiou, who blasted a slap shot from the left circle over the glove of Jones to make it 3-0 Red Wings at 6:05 of the third period.

Logan Couture had a couple of close chances, but didn’t puck the puck into the net. The Sharks were shut out by the Red Wings 3-0 in their final regular season meeting.

Jimmy Howard finished with 30 saves for the Red Wings. Martin Jones made 29 saves for the Sharks.
