Coyotes Fate In Arizona Could Be Determined Wednesday

by | Jun 10, 2015

The nightmare that is the Arizona Coyotes has taken a turn for the worst.

The NHL wants the Coyotes to stay. Its owners are backing the team up and trying to profit as much as possible to an ever-growing region of building a hockey fan base. They just seem to be fighting with a bully that is the city of Glendale, who could be deciding the fate of the team today.

From Yahoo Sports and the Associated Press:

The City of Glendale has called for a special meeting on Wednesday to determine whether to end an arena lease agreement with the Arizona Coyotes, further clouding the team’s future in the desert.

The meeting agenda calls for the city council to consider whether to cancel the professional services and arena lease agreement between Glendale and IceArizona, which co-owns the Coyotes with Andrew Barroway.

Some council members have said the Coyotes breached the contract by using money from the city as part of the lease agreement to pay down debt incurred when IceArizona bought the team in 2013.

Of course the Coyotes responded with their statement:

“This is a blatant attempt to renege on a valid contract that was negotiated fairly and in good faith and in compliance with all laws and procedures. In the event the City Council initiates any action to revoke, repeal or otherwise rescind the agreement, the Coyotes will immediately take all actions available to them under the law against the City of Glendale.”

Gary Betteman also stated before game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final that he fully supports the right to keep the team in Arizona due to its rising interest in hockey (even if the fans do not show it).

If the city of Glendale is able to rip up the agreement to allow the Coyotes to play in Arizona, this could be a professional sports first where a team is purposefully put homeless. This means cities that have been considering picking up an NHL team via relocation very well could by this season. Las Vegas, Seattle, Quebec, and even Toronto will be keeping eyes on its decision today.
