This article profiles the NHL unrestricted free agent right wings and is the second of five installments. Where a player plays more than one position, his secondary position(s) are shown in parenthesis.
Rankings were not constructed based on skill level and production alone. There were a number of factors which played into these rankings. Skill level, ability, production, age, potential upside, prior and projected salary, as well as speculation on where each player’s career might go in the next couple of years, were all contributing factors.
RIGHT WINGS
Grade - C
This is an average group at best; there is some talent, but very few guarantees. Most of the talent is comprised of aging players or unproven youngsters. There is the potential for some steals, but there is also a high bust factor with some of these potential signings. Regardless of how well things turn out for some of these right wingers, this group doesn’t come close to the lefties in this year’s class.
1. Teemu Selanne - Anaheim Ducks
36-years-old, shoots right
Much like his good buddy, Paul Kariya, Selanne has bounced back from a horrible injury plagued 2003-04 season in Colorado to become an elite player once again in Anaheim. Selanne has had back to back phenomenal years with 90 and 94 points. At nearly 37, he shows no signs of slowing down and is likely to remain as Anaheim's top gun.
Prior Salary - $3.75 million
Projected Salary - $5.5 million
Projected Team - Anaheim Ducks
2. Brendan Shanahan - New York Rangers
38-years-old, shoots right (LW)
Shanahan has had two very good years in a row, post lockout, when many thought he would begin to slow down or even shut it down. At this point, it's kind of hard to count out “Shanny,” probably an all time great. Therefore, he is one of the top free agents on the market and any team who signs him will benefit from his presence.
Prior Salary - $4 million
Projected Salary - $4 million
Projected Team - New York Rangers
3. Todd Bertuzzi - Detroit Red Wings
32-years-old, shoots left
Bertuzzi has always been a bit overrated and inconsistent. At times, he is an elite player and other times he clearly isn't. It’s kind of a crapshoot with Bertuzzi, season to season, game to game. Add in the back problems from last year and the effects from the Steve Moore situation (which still remains) and you have a 6' 3”, 245 pound question mark. After Forsberg, he is the biggest high risk/high reward signing of this class. In the end, it might be best for Bertuzzi and his next team to agree on a one year deal.
Prior Salary - $5.26 million
Projected Salary - $3.5 million
Projected Team - Detroit Redwings
4. Bill Guerin - San Jose Sharks
36-years-old, shoots right
Guerin bounced back from a terrible 13 goal output in 2005-06 to notch his fifth 30+ goal season (36 to be exact). Guerin still has wheels and brings a rare combination of speed, size, and a mean streak to the table. He may not be able to equal last year’s output, but expect him to produce closer to that than the 13 goals from two seasons ago.
Prior Salary - $2 million
Projected Salary - $3.5 million
Projected Team - St. Louis Blues
5. Viktor Kozlov - New York Islanders
32-years-old, shoots right (C, LW)
Kozlov had a nice bounce-back season with 25 goals and 51 points after struggling for a couple of seasons in New Jersey. He is a big guy who can play all three forward positions and can be downright hard to handle when he is on his game. His problem has always been consistency; when he is motivated and playing well, he can be an absolute force.
Prior Salary - $865,000
Projected Salary - $3 million
Projected Team - New York Islanders
6. Scott Walker - Carolina Hurricanes
33-years-old, shoots right
Walker is a very solid, underrated player who demonstrates character, works hard and has a sound overall game. He’s a leader who will do whatever it takes for his team to win. Injuries have always been a major concern with Walker, though. A healthy Walker is a very versatile and solid addition to any team.
Prior Salary - $1.52 million
Projected Salary - $2.6 million
Projected Team - Nashville Predators
7. Jeff O'Neill - Toronto Maple Leafs
31-years-old, shoots right
O'Neill has gone from goal scoring seasons of 41, 31, and 30, to 19 and 22 after the lockout. What looked like a perfect match with him going to his home-town Maple Leafs, hasn't exactly worked out. Don’t give up on O'Neill; he’s could still be a 25-30 goal, 50+ point forward.
Prior Salary - $1.5 million
Projected Salary - $2.6 million
Projected Team - Boston Bruins
8. Mark Recchi - Pittsburgh Penguins
39-years-old, shoots left (LW)
Recchi is still pretty good, even at age 39. He is coming off back to seasons with the Pens in which he had between 65 and 70 points. He's a nice addition to any team on a one or two year deal, especially considering he’ll be a bargain.
Prior Salary - $2.28 million
Projected Salary - $2.28 million
Projected Team - Pittsburgh Penguins
9. Richard Zednik - New York Islanders
31-years-old, shoots left (LW)
Zednik is at a crossroads in his career. The three seasons prior to the lockout, he scored 22, 31, and 26 goals. Post lockout, things haven't gone quite as well. Zednik has battled injuries, inconsistency, and hasn't hit the 20 goal mark in either season. Last year was particularly bad for him, playing in only 42 games, and netting only seven tallies. Still, don’t give up on him just yet. Zednik is a skilled goal scorer, who can be very strong and difficult to handle physically. Assuming he comes at a bargain rate and returns to form, he has the potential to be a quality value signing for someone.
Prior Salary - $1.97 million
Projected salary - $1.8 million
Projected Team - Florida Panthers
10. Owen Nolan - Phoenix Coyotes
34-years-old, shoots right (C)
Nolan bounced back nicely in 2006-07 after two seasons off due to the lockout and injuries. He isn’t the dominant scoring force he once was, but he can still add a lot to an NHL team as a role player. Nolan has always been a leader wherever he’s gone, and he’s tough and gritty. Injuries could become a problem again, as they have throughout his career. For a team in need of his qualities, Nolan would be a good signing.
Prior Salary - $1.22 million
Projected Salary - $2 million
Projected Team - San Jose Sharks
The Best of the Rest:
11. Eric Lindros (C)
12. Ruslan Fedotenko (LW)
13. Anson Carter
14. Mike Johnson
15. Radek Dvorak
