Rosie's Rebounds: Super Bowl Sunday, 2010
February 07, 2010 @ 11:11 AM ET
Welcome back to yet another editions of Rosie’s Rebounds. In honor of the Super Bowl today let’s get a couple of things out of the way. First a “word from our sponsor.”
All right let’s get another thing out of the way.
As some of you may know by now, I usually have a cheap budget when it comes to musical performances. Look no further than Don Cherry and Vince McMahon as prime examples. But in honor of tradition, I like to keep this thing going every once in awhile.
Normally, I would make an attempt to get the greatest band from the 70’s, The Who, to come perform for an edition of Rosie’s Rebounds. But, since they are booked to perform in some big game between the Saints and the Colts later today, I had to once again, go back to the cheap budget and get William Shatner this week.
Check out this “performance” from the latest edition of WWE Monday Night Raw from February 1, 2010.
At least Shattner doesn’t take himself too seriously.
Okay, with all of that out of the way, it is now time for another edition of Rosie’s Rebounds.
BC-BU Beanpot Final (Again)
Tomorrow night at the TD Garden, Boston College and Boston University will battle it out in the Beanpot final. And while it is the 250th meeting all time between the two schools, legendary BU head coach Jack Parker had this to say on the repetitiveness of a BC-BU Beanpot final.
“It’s not a good thing if BU and BC win it all the time,” Parker said after the Terriers’ 2-1 win over Northeastern last Monday night. “The tournament loses some of its luster when it’s those teams.
“You know who wants BU and BC every year? BU and BC! That’s it. People will get sick of it…people are sick of it.”
However, don’t expect Parker to roll over for Harvard or Northeastern for the right to go to the finals of the "BU Invitational" or perhaps more appropriately, the “Jack Parker Invitational”
“Not on my watch,” the sarcastic Parker said about Harvard or Northeastern going through BU to get to the Beanpot final.

Streaks Galore in the NHL
The Washington Capitals look to extend their winning streak to 14 today when they take on the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second showdown of the season between Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin. The Caps have already broken their franchise record for consecutive wins, and are only four wins away from tying the NHL record for the longest winning streak that was set by the Penguins back in the 1992-93 season. The extra irony in this makes this a must see TV game at noon.
And while the Ottawa Senators had their 11 game winning streak snapped last night against Toronto, the LA Kings are still rolling having now won nine in a row, which is a franchise record.
On the flip side of things, the Boston Bruins have lost 10 games in a row, which is their longest losing streak in nine decades, and with their loss to Carolina last night, the New York Islanders have now lost seven in a row. Ironically, both teams aren’t too far from the eighth place Philadelphia Flyers in the standings despite the slump (Bruins are two points behind, Isles are five points behind).
Shows you how crazy this year has been with all these surges and slumps.
Rebounds of the Week
Here are the Rebounds of the week for February 7th, 2010.
Player: Eric Staal, F, Carolina Hurricanes
Since being named the captain of the ‘Canes back on January 20th, the elder of the Brothers Staal has been on a tear with 10 goals in his last 10 games. The team has responded quite well too as they have gone 7-3 during that span. Not too shabby for a team that couldn’t buy a break early on in the year.
Team: Carolina
See Above
Game: BC-BU Beanpot Final Monday 8:00 P.M.
Not going to say much more about this, other than these teams are playing their best hockey of the year right now. Should be a great one at the Garden.
And finally, I would like to send my condolences to Leafs GM Brian Burke and his family after the tragic passing of his son, Brendan Burke. Brendan was the team manager for the Miami RedHawks who was just recently featured in a column by ESPN’s John Buccigross on ESPN.com. For those who want to read Buccigross’ article, you can click here, it's a great read. One day after the tragic passing of Brendan Burke, the RedHawks came out with a lot of emotion, and defeated Lake Superior State in a 10-4 final.
See you next week…
