Capitals Promote Woods
June 22, 2009 @ 9:20 AM ET
The Washington Capitals have promoted Bob Woods from Hershey of the American Hockey League to be an assistant coach with Bruce Boudreau’s staff. Woods just completed his first full season behind the bench in Hershey, winning a Calder Cup.
Woods was also an assistant under Boudreau when Hershey claimed the Calder Cup in 2006. He replaced Boudreau on Thanksgiving Day in 2007 when Boudreau was promoted to Washington as head coach.
"I'm happy Bruce has got confidence in me and believes in me," Woods said, "that George [McPhee] and the Washington organization have faith I can get the job done.”
Woods takes over for Jay Leach, who was let go by the Capitals following the end of Washington’s playoff run; he will help coach the defense.
Woods spent 12 seasons as a player and 11 seasons as a coach. Woods is a three time Calder Cup champion, having won it as a player in 1997 with Hershey, as an assistant coach in 2006 with Hershey, and as a head coach in 2009 with Hershey.
