Another crazy week in college hockey: First Boston University, the Inside Hockey #1 for three weeks running, loses to Massachusetts, then Colorado College splits with Minnesota State, and also we had previously #8 New Hampshire lose twice, Denver gets swept by St. Cloud State, and to add on to that, we have a new #1 team in the Inside Hockey top 10.
Yesterday I did a running diary of how I selected the new #1 team and pointed out the different scenarios.
Here is the top 10 for this week:
#1 Minnesota (6-0-4) Last Week, #2: The Gophers had another 1-0-1 weekend, but this time, it was good enough to put them in the top spot. Ahead of them will be a trip to Denver for their only two games against the Pioneers this season.
#2 Boston University (7-2-0) LW, #1: The Terriers only fall one spot after their loss to UMass-Amherst after their win against Northeastern last night. This week BU has two at home against a always tough Vermont squad.
#3 Colorado College (7-2-3) LW, #3: The Tigers stay at the #3 spot after a split at Minnesota State. CC will play a much improved Alaska-Anchorage team in Anchorage for two this week.
#4 Notre Dame (7-3-1) LW, #5: Some are saying that the Irish don’t belong in the top five, even though they defeated Boston College. As Lee Corso of College Gameday says best: Not so fast my friend! The Irish are 5-0-1 in their last six, and they are getting great play from Jordan Pearce in net and freshman forward Billy Maday. This weekend, the Irish have a home and home with Bowling Green, who is coming off a sweep of Northern Michigan.
#5 Boston College (6-3-1) LW, #7: Don’t even think about counting the Eagles out. Just look at what they did against New Hampshire. They were down 3-0 early in the second, only to storm back with eight goals, en route to the 8-6 victory. This weekend, the Eagles have a home and home with UMass.
#6 Miami (6-3-3), LW, Unranked: The RedHawks apparently like to come and go as they please in the Inside Hockey top 10. One week they are ranked, the next week, they can’t win a game it seems like. This week Enrico Blasi’s squad host Michigan for two.
#7 Northeastern (7-2-2) LW, #9: Goaltender Brad Thiessen and the Huskies, move up two spots to #7 after being ranked #9 last week. Northeastern has a tough weekend ahead of them as they host New Hampshire before a visit to the Tsongas Arena to face Mass-Lowell.
#8 Michigan (8-4-0) LW, #6: A loss on home ice against Western Michigan dropped the Wolverines two spots from last week. Though they were able to salvage a split, the Maize and Blue have some questions in goal they will need answered between Bryan Hogan and Billy Sauer.
#9 Air Force (10-0-0) LW, #10: The Falcons just keep on rolling along. They have outscored their opponents 47-13 up to this point. Frank Serratore’s squad will look forward to their meeting with Colorado College and Denver, but before that, they face Sacred Heart.
#10 Princeton (5-1-0) LW, Unranked: The first ECAC team to reach the top 10 are the Princeton Tigers. After their only blemish against Cornell, the Tigers have outscored their opponents 12-3 in their last four games. This week Princeton will face Clarkson and St. Lawrence on the road.
Dropped Out:
Denver (Previously #4)
New Hampshire (Previously #8)
The Inside Hockey Players of the Week:
Sam Goodwin, Igor Mironov and Dan Sullivan: Niagara University
Reason being, those three players made a pretty impressive feat. Each of them scored a shorthanded goal in the second period coming 1:09 apart en route to a 5-2 victory over Canisius College Tuesday night. It even made the SportsCenter top 10 plays of the day reaching #2.
