MILFORD CT- The Sacred Heart Pioneers hosted the American International College Yellow Jackets on Saturday night for Game Two at the Milford Ice Pavilion. AIC was hoping for another challenging win, like the night before in Springfield, MA, but left being shutout 4-0.
The first period started out with a bang. Exactly 18 seconds into the game, Pioneer Eric Giosa scores with the help of Bear Trapp and Ryan Miniaci. This was only the beginning of the Pioneers scoring streak.
Both the Pioneers and the Yellow Jackets decided to come out hard, having their fair share of penalties. Penalties consisted of roughing, hooking, elbowing, tripping and holding.
The Pioneers proved in the second period that they were set on winning the game, scoring three goals in a matter of five minutes. At :56, Pioneer Matt Gingera put the puck in the net with an assist from Kyle Tyll and Dave Grimson, making it 2-0.
At 3:27, Pioneer Chris Brown scored with the help of Kyle Tyll and Adam DeJong, proving that they weren’t going to stop their scoring streak. Pioneer Corey Laurysen scored the fourth and final goal for Sacred Heart at 5:04 with an assist from Patrick Knowlton, putting it at 4-0.
The third period didn’t see any scoring action but there were quite a few penalties. Pioneer Erik Boisvert and Yellow Jacket Keith Rodger both received a 10-minute misconduct offense for hitting after the whistle and fighting on the ice.
The Pioneers out shot the Yellow Jackets overall with 33 shots on goal while the Yellow Jackets only had 19. Tonight’s win brings the Sacred Heart Pioneer’s Atlantic Hockey Conference record to 2-4-2.
Next weekend, the Pioneers will travel to Colorado Springs to take on the top team in Atlantic Hockey and Inside Hockey No. 10, the Air Force Falcons.
