Mavericks win on parents’ weekend

November 16, 2008 @ 1:32 AM ET

OMAHA, Neb- Nebraska-Omaha defeated Ferris State 4-2 tonight in Omaha, as one Maverick reach a great milestone in college hockey.

Ferris State’s Cody Chupp started the scoring in the first period. Justin Menke and Blair Riley were accredited the assists on Chupp’s goal. The Bulldogs were able to hold off the Mavericks to end the first period with the 1-0 lead.

2:23 in the second sophomore, Rich Purslow, tied the game after getting help from senior, Dan Charleston, and sophomore, Eric Olimb. Purslow’s goal held strong into the third period, keeping the score tied at 1-1.

Early in the third period, Charleston notched 100 career points as a Maverick on a power play goal. Assisting him was freshman, Alex Hudson, and senior, Tomas Klempa.

“It’s a great honor," Charleston said. "It’s not just me, it’s the team, I can’t do that without them. But the amount of wins we have is more important than the amount of points I have in my career.”

UNO’s coach Mike Kemp was proud of Charleston’s accomplishment.

“I was just so happy he did it at home on parent’s weekend, I mean how appropriate with all his family here he hits that milestone.” Kemp said.

The Bulldogs never backed down. At 4:38 Corey Couturier tied the game again at 2-2, after beating senior goaltender, Jerad Kaufmann, top-shelf. Casey Haines and Derek Graham got the helpers on the tying goal.

Almost two minutes later, junior, Jeric Agosta, stole the puck from a Ferris State defenseman and slid it passed Ferris goaltender, Pat Nagle, for what would be the game winner.

“I took the middle away from him. I kind of just stripped him of it and I went in to make a move on the goaltender,” Agosta said about the game winner. “I guess I was kind of lucky to get the play.”

Sophomore, Matt Ambroz, sealed the deal with an empty net goal with eight seconds left on the clock. Junior, Eddie DelGrosso, kept his point streak alive by getting the assist on Ambroz’s goal. Getting points out of a weekend is always on the to-do list for Kemp.

“With the kinds of upsets in the league for us to get points at this point in time those will loom large when we get into the second half of the year,” said Kemp.

UNO will continue their home stand against Michigan State Spartans Friday, Nov. 21, at 7:05 p.m.
