What a week in college hockey! First Notre Dame defeats Boston College, then you had Minnesota go 1-0-1 against New Hampshire, then Colorado College splits with North Dakota, and then BC loses to Maine yesterday. So what does this mean in the Inside Hockey Top 10? Here are the polls.
#1 Boston University (6-1-0) Last Week #1: The Terriers are No. 1 for the third week in a row, thanks to a 6-4 victory at Mass-Lowell and they were down 4-3 with less than three minutes to play. BU travels to UMass-Amherst on Friday before returning to Agganis Arena Sunday when they take on a pesky Northeastern squad.
#2 Minnesota (5-0-3) LW #4: The Gophers were an impressive 4-for-11 on the power play this weekend as they went 1-0-1 against New Hampshire. The Gophers currently have six players averaging a point (or more) per game. And don’t forget about the defense and goaltending either, led by defensemen David Fischer and Cade Fairchild and Alex Kangas between the pipes. They’re very solid together as a unit. This week the Gophers host Michigan Tech for two.
#3 Colorado College (6-1-3) LW #2: The Tigers were able to bounce back in impressive fashion Saturday night after a 3-1 loss to North Dakota. CC won it on offense this time in a 7-4 victory at Colorado Springs. This weekend the Tigers have a tough road trip ahead against Minnesota State.
#4 Denver (6-2-1) LW #7: Denver moves up three spots after an impressive sweep of Minnesota-Duluth, led by two freshmen Luke Salazar and Joe Colborne. The DU defense also did very well holding the Bulldogs to just two goals. This weekend, the Pioneers travel to St. Cloud State to face the Huskies for a tough two game series.
#5 Notre Dame (6-3-0) LW Unranked: What a difference two weeks make. The Irish were 2-3-0 going into the Northern Michigan series, they swept them, and then in impressive fashion, went to the east coast and defeated BC and Providence College. Jordan Pearce was spectacular both nights between the pipes, and the Irish defense could be one of the best units in the nation. Jeff Jackson’s squad returns to South Bend to face Lake Superior for two games.
#6 Michigan (7-3-0) LW #6: Coach Red Berenson and company were able to bounce back against Alaska after their loss Friday night to the Nanooks. Aaron Palushaj and the offense will look to take care of business this weekend as the Wolverines have a home and home with Western Michigan.
#7 Boston College (5-3-0) LW #3: Down four spots from a week ago, the Eagles fall to their lowest ranking of the season at No. 7. This weekend BC will look to rebound against Merrimack on the road Friday, and New Hampshire Saturday night at Conte Forum will be a key early season Hockey East showdown.
#8 New Hampshire (4-2-3) LW #7: The Wildcats would like to have that Friday night game back against Minnesota. However, UNH will need to look past that and look ahead this weekend to two games on the road against Mass-Lowell and BC.
#9 Northeastern (6-1-2) LW #9: The Huskies have momentum and will look to sustain it this weekend against Vermont and BU, two tough opponents on the road.
#10 Air Force (8-0-0) LW #10: The Falcons had an off week this past week, and now look ahead to a road trip to Worcester, for a face-off against Holy Cross.
Dropped Out:
Miami (Previously #8)
The Inside Hockey Player of the Week:
Ryan McDonagh SO. D, Wisconsin:
Quite frankly, many people were impressive this weekend. However, it was McDonagh who was the most valuable to his team against Michigan Tech which got him the nod. The defenseman from Arden Hills, Minnesota, had two goals and an assist, to go along with the great ‘D’ he played against the Huskies. McDonagh is the third leading scorer on the Badgers, and he as well as the team could start to peak as the Badgers are on a three game winning streak.
