An interesting week nonetheless in college hockey as we saw eight games go into overtime, as well as a few upsets down the road. This week, the Inside Hockey top ten has shifted a little bit in this crazy week as teams are sliding up and down the rankings.
Here is this weeks top 10:
#1 Boston University (5-1-0) Last Week #1: BU is firing on all cylinders. Senior Forwards Brandon Yip and Chris Higgins have stepped up in a big way. Sophomore defensemen Colby Cohen and Kevin Shattenkirk are arguably the best defensive pair in college hockey and the freshmen goaltending duo of Kieran Millan and Grant Rollheiser have done very well. The Terriers are coming off a 7-2 win at Vermont. Next week, BU will have another tough task as they travel to UMass-Lowell.
Thanks to Mike Alloy for the blurb
#2 Colorado College (5-0-3) LW #3: After three straight ties, two against Clarkson and one Friday night at Denver, the Colorado College Tigers edged the same DU Pioneer team 3-2 last night at Colorado Springs. The offense still needs to get going a little bit scoring only 20 goals, however, Scott McCulloch and Andreas Vlassopoulous, two of the big offensive weapons, have seemed to be getting going. This weekend, CC will face North Dakota for two at Colorado Springs.
#3 Boston College (5-1-0) LW #2: A little shift in the standings between CC and BC as the Eagles, who were No. 2 last week, drop one spot to No. 3. Brock Bradford played a big part this weekend, including scoring the game tying goal, and the game winning goal in BC’s 4-3 come from behind victory Friday night at Merrimack. Bradford also tallied a goal Thursday night against Merrimack. This weekend, “The Holy War on Ice” will take place, as BC will host Notre Dame before traveling to Maine on Sunday.
#4 Minnesota (4-0-2) LW #4: The Gophers came out with an impressive three point weekend against Minnesota State. Ryan Stoa is playing his best hockey with six goals and four assists in six games, including three special teams goals, two on the power play and one shorthanded. Alex Kangas is playing very well in net and the Gophers in general are playing great hockey. This weekend, they will be tested again as they will host New Hampshire for two games.
#5 New Hampshire (4-1-2) LW #6: After their win on Halloween against Northeastern, James van Riemsdyk and company took their show on the road for the first of six straight road games against the same Husky squad and came away with a tie. Those remaining games by the way, at Minnesota (twice), Mass-Lowell, BC, and one more with Northeastern before hosting Providence on November 22. It will be tough road trips for the Wildcats.
#6 Michigan (6-2-0) LW #9: After the 7-2 debacle at Boston University, the Wolverines recovered nicely against Ohio State and look like they can get back on track outscoring the Buckeyes 10-4 in the two games. One more thing to note, with the two wins, Red Berenson now has 650 victories in his coaching career. This weekend the team travels a long way to the University of Alaska for two games.
#7 Denver (4-2-1) LW #5: What a difference two weeks has made: one week they were No. 1, the next week they fall four spots and now they fall two spots at No. 7. This week DU will look to rebound from their current three game winless streak against Minnesota-Duluth as they host the Bulldogs for two games.
#8 Miami (4-2-2) LW #8: The Redhawks were able to salvage a split against Alaska on Saturday night. The goaltending duo of Connor Knapp and Cody Reichard are playing very well between the pipes and have kept the Redhawks in every game. This weekend, the Redhawks host a tough Ferris State squad for two.
#9 Northeastern (5-1-2) LW #7: The Huskies were able to get one point against UNH this past weekend as they held off to a 2-2 tie Saturday night at Matthews Arena after they lost on the road on Halloween night 4-2. Brad Thiessen was peppered with shots, but held his own. This weekend the Huskies host Bentley College Saturday night.
#10 Air Force (8-0-0) LW Unranked: What a great start for Frank Serratore and the Falcons and they deservingly belong in the top 10. AF has outscored their opponents 41-12 and players such as Jacques Lamoureux, who had four goals and an assist this past weekend against Bentley and Andrew Volkening, who is very good between the pipes. Serratore’s squad has the week off. Next week the Falcons will travel to Holy Cross for two games.
Dropped Out:
Minnesota State (previously #10)
The Inside Hockey Player of the Week:
Richard Bachman SO. G, Colorado College
Once again Bachman has proved that he is the best goaltender in the country. He had 84 saves on 88 shots against Denver this weekend, and has been the backbone of the team so far. Up to this point, Bachman is 4-0-3 with a 1.24 goals against average and an astounding .960 save percentage, and two shutouts.
