CHA Honors

Wayne State swept the CHA players of the week with senior forward Sam Poyton, senior rearguard Natalie Payne, and freshman forward Veronique Laramee-Paquette getting th e honors. They are the offensive, defensive, and rookie players, respectively, for the week ending October 26th, 2008. Poyton scored four goals and one assist, Payne added four assists, and Paquette had two goals and one assist.

Three of Poyton’s goals and the assist came on Friday night as Wayne State defeated Colgate 6-2. In that game Payne and Laramee-Paquette assisted on Alyssa Baldin’s game-winner 9:02 into the second stanza with Laramee-Paquette scoring a goal of her own as Payne assisted 58 seconds into the third to give Wayne State a 5-2 lead.

On Saturday Poyton’s goal with 2:47 left in the second made it a 2-1 score in favor of Colgate in Wayne State’s eventual 3-2 loss. Laramee-Paquette netted Wayne State’s second goal with 15 seconds left with Payne adding the assist. Poyton finished the weekend a +2, Payne a +3, and Laramee-Paquette a +1.

ECAC Honors Johnson, Baribeau, and Chartier

Cornell sophomore forward Rebecca Johnson, Clarkson freshman forward Juana Baribeau, and St. Lawrence junior netminder Brittony Chartier have received the ECAC’s player, rookie, and goalie of the week awards. In Cornell’s 7-1 romp over Vermont on Friday night, Johnson netted the game-winner 16:04 into the first to go along with her two assists with one of them coming on Stephanie Holmes’ goal to open the scoring at the 5:55 mark of the second and the other one coming on Catherine White’s goal with 5:25 left in the second to give Cornell a 4-0 lead. She was named the first star of the contest.

Her goal 2:59 into the second on Saturday night was the game-winner in the 5-1 win. She also assisted on the goal after hers scored by White and Holmes’ goal with 4:53 left in the third to give Cornell a 5-0 lead. She was the first star in Friday’s game and the second in Saturday’s.

Baribeau scored the game winner in Clarkson’s 5-1 win over Vermont on Friday with the goal coming 51 seconds past the midway point of the second period. She also assisted on Marie-Jo Gaudet’s goal 6:04 into the second to tie the game at 1-1 as well as Danielle Boudreau’s goal at the 7:20 mark of the third to give Clarkson a 2-2 tie.

Chartier improved her record to 2-1-2 and made 30 saves (a career high) in St. Lawrence’s 5-1 win over Robert Morris on Friday. She followed that up with 13 saves for her first shutout this season in the 5-1 win on Saturday and was named the game’s third star. Chartier is now 3-1-2 this season with a 0.927 SAV%.

Cherewyk, Watchorn, and Wilson are Hockey East’s Best

Boston University teammates sophomore forward Lauren Cherewyk and freshman defender Tara Watchorn along with Connecticut senior netminder Brittany Wilson are Hockey East’s player, rookie, and defensive players of the week. Last Thursday night, Cherewyk netted two goals with the game-winner coming at the 11:55 mark of the third in Boston’s 3-2 win over New Hampshire. That night Watchorn netted her first NCAA goal 1:54 into the first period. Cherewyk and Watchorn were the first and second stars of the game respectively.

On Saturday night, Cherewyk netted a hat trick, while Watchorn added three assists in their team’s 8-1 victory over Maine. Cherewyk was also the first star of that contest.

Wilson made 23 saves against Princeton on Friday night in her team’s 3-0 shutout and 11 in relief of Alexandra Garcia in the 4-1 loss to Maine on Saturday. She finished the weekend with an 0.70 GAA, and 0.972 SAV%.

WCHA Honors Holmlov, Vetter, and Spooner

University of Minnesota-Duluth junior forward Elin Holmlov, Wisconsin senior goalie Jessie Vetter, and Ohio State freshman forward Natalie Spooner have been honored with the WCHA offensive, defensive, and rookie players of the week awards. Holmlov scored once Friday night as UMD beat Minnesota State 5-1 and added a hat trick on Saturday in the 5-1 win. It was UMD’s first sweep this season.

Vetter made 33 saves in the 1-1 tie with Minnesota on Friday and 27 in the 2-1 win on Sunday. She had five shutout periods over the weekend and finished with an 0.968 SAV%.

On Friday, Spooner’s netted the first two goals of the game with her first one being the game-winner 3:18 into the second in a game that OSU won over Bemidji State 3-0. She assisted on Rachel’s Davis’ opening goal of the game 12:35 into the first and netted the game-winner with 39 seconds left in the second in Saturday’s 2-1 win.

Wisconsin Unanimous Number One

For the second consecutive week, Wisconsin remains the unanimous number one in both the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine and USCHO.com polls. Minnesota and Harvard remained at second and third respectively in both polls with Boston College moved from seventh to fourth in the polls, and Dartmouth remained at fifth in the first poll and New Hampshire took fifth in the latter.

Games This Week

When play resumed last Tuesday, Team USA faced St. Cloud State in St. Cloud and came away with a 5-1 win as Erin Keys and Caitlin Cahow added a goal and assist each.

In Hockey East action on Thursday, Lauren Cherewyk’s goal with 8:45 left in regulation saw Boston University edge New Hampshire 3-2.

Juana Baribeau’s goal and two assists with her goal being the game-winner at the 10:51 mark of the third gave Clarkson a 5-22 win over Mercyhurst; Sam Poynton’s hat trick plus one assist saw Wayne State skate to a 6-2 win over Colgate; Carson Duggan’s hat trick led St. Lawrence to a 5-1 win over Robert Morris.

Alisa Harrison had a goal and two assists, and Whitney Naslund and Allison Wright had a goal and assist apiece as Rensselaer beat Niagara 5-3; Cornell romped all over Vermont 7-1 with Liz Zorn adding two goals and Rebecca Johnson scoring once and adding three assists; Michelle Binning, Amy Hollstein, and Kristen Russell provided all of Princeton’s offense in blanking Connecticut 3-0.

Melissa Jacques led North Dakota to a 3-0 shutout over Union with two goals; and Danielle Hirsch’s goal 12:52 into the first period was all the scoring St. Cloud State needed in their 3-0 win over Brown.

In WCHA conference play, Ohio State shutout Bemidji State 3-0 with Natalie Spooner’s game-winner coming 3:18 into the first; Meghan Duggan scored for Wisconsin with Monique Lamoureux replying for Minnesota in their 1-1 overtime tie; and UMD skated to a 5-1 victory over Minnesota State with Laura Fridfinnson, Saara Tuominen, and Tawni Mattila each scoring once and adding one assist each.

Melissa Waldie’s game-winner at the 12:16 mark of the third saw Clarkson double Mercyhurst 4-2; Beth Rotenberg goal and assist led the way for Colgate as they gained a split in their series with Wayne State with a3-2 win; Alley Bero scored twice and was named the game’s first star in St. Lawrence’s 5-0 blanking of Robert Morris to sweep their series; with one goal and one assist each Allison Wright, Whitney Naslund, Allysen Weidner, and Nicole McDonald led Rensselaer to a sweep of their series with Niagara with a 5-1 win.

Florence Schelling made 24 saves on 25 shots as Northeastern skated past Quinnipiac 3-1; Catherine White was the first star of the game with her two goals and one assist in Cornell’s 5-1 victory over Vermont; North Dakota swept Union with a 4-1 win as Marie-Michelle Poirier and Alyssa Wiebe scored once and added an assist each with Poirer’s gaol being the game-winner 1:23 into the third.

Micaela Long’s game-winner with 13:32 left in the second gave New Hampshire a 5-3 win over Vermont; Kristen Young was the first star of the game in Princeton’s 4-1 win over Connecticut; and Brown and St. Cloud State skated to a 2-2 overtime tie with Diana Karouzos scoring both of St. Cloud’s goals, and Skyelar Siwak and Samantha Stortini providing Brown’s offense with a goal and assist each.

In Hockey East action, Lauren Cherewyk’s hat trick along with Erin Seman’s two goals and one assist and Melissa Anderson’s goal and three assists saw Boston University romp all over Maine 8-1; while their crosstown rivals Boston University skated to a 3-1 win over Providence as Tracy Johnson led the way with one goal and one assist.

Natalie Spooner netted another game-winner on Saturday with 39 seconds left in the second as Ohio State nipped Bemidji State 2-1; and UMD sweeping Minnesota State with a 5-1 win as Elin Holmlov netted a hat trick on her way to being named the first star of the game.

The lone exhibition game saw Harvard get past McGill 3-2 as Whitney Kennedy netted the game winner with 7:05 left in regulation.

Sunday’s action saw McGill edge Yale 2-1 in exhibition play with M.A. Leclerc-Auger netting the game-winner 3:10 into the second stanza; while Molly Schaus picked up her fourth win of the season as Boston College blanked Quinnipiac 4-0 in non-conference action.

In WCHA play, Erika Lawlor’s game-winner 11:23 into the third saw Wisconsin nip Minnesota 2-1; and Genevieve Turgeon make 47 saves on 51 shots on goal in a losing cause as Providence doubled Maine 4-2 in Hockey East action.

The Leaders

Robert Morris is the only CHA team to play any conference games and have a 2-0-0 conference record. They are tied with Mercyhurst for the overall conference standings as both are 3-3-0.

There is no change in the conference scoring stats with Robert Morris teammates Megan Picinic, Kathryn Stack, and Brianna Delaney, and Syracuse teammates Lisa Mullan and Megan Skelly all have one goal and one assist each in the conference scoring race with Robert Morris netminder Brianna McLaughlin leads all netminders conference wise as she was the goalie in both Robert Morris wins, with a 1.00 GAA, and 0.955 SAV%.

Wayne State senior forward Sam Poyton takes over the overall CHA scoring race from Niagara senior forward Ashley Riggs as she now has four goals and five assists in nine games, with teammate junior netminder Lindsey Park leading all goalies with her 2-1-1 record, 0.929 SAV% and 1.71 GAA.

ECAC conference play has not started yet so Colgate leads the overall ECAC standings with their 4-3-0 record.

Cornell sophomore forward Rebecca Johnson leads all ECAC point getters with her two goals and six assists in two games played.

Among netminders Johnson’s teammate junior Jenny Niesluchowski is the leader of the pack with one win, no losses, and no ties, to go along with her goals against average of 1.00 and 0.952 SAV%.

Boston University and Northeastern share the Hockey East conference standings as they are both 2-0-0-0 with four points with Northeastern having the best overall conference record as they are 5-0-2.

Boston University sophomore forward Lauren Cherewyk tops Hockey East conference point getters as she has five goals in five games with Connecticut junior forward Dominique Thibault getting the nod for the overall lead with 10 goals and six assists over a 10 game period.

Between the pipes a pair of Northeastern teammates share the conference lead as Leah Sulyma and Florence Schelling are both 1-0-0 with a 0.00 GAA, and 1.000 SAV%. With Schelling takes the overall lead with her record of three wins against no losses and one tie with a goals against average of 0.65 and 0.978 SAV%.

Wisconsin is the WCHA conference leader as the Badgers have 11 points (5-0-1), and their 9-0-1 record gives them the overall lead as well.

Golden Gopher freshman forward Monique Lamoureux leads all conference scorers as she has scored five times and added five assists in the six games that she has played in, while Wisconsin sophomore forward Hilary Knight’s 13 goals to go along with her five helpers over an eight game time frame gives her the overall lead.

Wisconsin senior Jessie Vetter (5-0-1, 1.04 GAA, 0.957 SAV%) puts her into the lead among conference back-stoppers while her 8-0-1 record, 0.71 GAA, and 0.966 SAV% puts her into first place overall as well.

Upcoming Week

New Hampshire is at home to Boston University in Hockey East action to kick off weekly play on Thursday night.

In non-conference play on Friday, RIT is at home to Robert Morris, Sacred Heart makes their way to Syracuse, Clarkson is in Niagara, and Colgate welcomes Mercyhurst. All of those games are the first of two game series’ that finishes on Saturday.

ECAC conference play begins this Friday as Rensselaer is at home to Brown, Union hosts Yale, Dartmouth makes their way to Princeton, and Quinnipiac welcomes Harvard.

The lone game in Hockey East action sees Vermont traveling to Boston College.

There games are featured in WCHA action as Wisconsin hosts UMD, and Minnesota State is at home to Bemidji State for two game series’ that will conclude on Saturday. The other contest has Minnesota hosting St. Cloud State for the first of a home and home series that will finish up in St. Cloud on Saturday.

Union hosts Brown, Yale travels to Rensselaer, Quinnipiac is at home to Dartmouth, and Princeton hosts Harvard in ECAC action.

Three Hockey East tilts will see Boston College take on cross-town rivals Northeastern at Matthews, Arena while their other cross town rivals Boston University hosts Providence; and Vermont is in Durham, NH to take on the Wildcats.

The other WCHA game has North Dakota hosting Ohio State for two games with the second one on Sunday.

The lone non-conference game on Sunday sees Dartmouth hosting Boston College.
