IH Top 10 and POTW: 10/27

October 27, 2008 @ 9:14 AM ET

A lot of shaking going on in this week’s top 10, with previously #1 Denver splitting with Ohio State, Colorado College tying twice at Clarkson, and New Hampshire only getting one point this weekend. CC remains in the top three, however, Denver and UNH are now out of the top three.

This week, we have a new #1 and two new entries in the top 10, one getting back after exiting last week.

Let’s get to it:

#1 Boston University (4-1-0) Last Week #7: After a great show against Michigan, which they won 7-2; the Terriers are the third team to be No. 1 in the Inside Hockey top 10. This team went 3-1 this month against North Dakota, Michigan State, New Hampshire, and Michigan, with their only loss coming to the hands of UNH. This Saturday Matt Gilroy, Colin Wilson, Brian Strait and the Terriers travel to Vermont to face the Catamounts.

#2 Boston College (3-1-0) LW #4: After an upset loss against Northeastern, the Eagles had a great all-around effort against Vermont on Friday night. John Muse looks to be getting back to form, and the depth on this team is very deep. The Eagles even dress eight defensemen for practice. This week BC has a home and home with Merrimack.

#3 Colorado College (4-0-2) LW #3: How does a 4-0-2 team not in the top spot? Well the results weren’t to impressive against Alabama-Huntsville and Michigan Tech. Other than Chad Rau and Richard Bachman, two of the Hobey candidates in this week’s Hobey Baker Watch (done by Ryan Hurton) the team haven’t seen many other contributions. This weekend CC has a home and home series with their rival, Denver.

#4 Minnesota (3-0-1) LW #5: After coming back 2-0 to tie things up at Wisconsin, the Gophers came into the next night with a lot of confidence. Ryan Stoa is heating up after being out all of last year with an injury and sophomore goaltender Alex Kangas could be a dark horse for the Hobey. This weekend the Gophers have one at Mariucci Arena with Minnesota State (and one at the Xcel Energy Center).

#5 Denver (4-1-0) LW #1: After a split with Ohio State, the Pioneers fell four spots to No. 5 this week. Bruins first round pick Joe Colborne got his first goal this weekend and the super sophomore class led by Kyle Ostrow, Tyler Bozak and Anthony Maiani are very lethal. They will look to showcase their talent this weekend in their home and home series with Colorado College.

#6 New Hampshire (3-1-1) LW #2: After a tie on their home ice against Massachusetts and a loss on the road against St. Lawrence, the UNH Wildcats fall four spots to No. 6. Junior goaltender Brian Foster has made 30-plus saves in four of the five games he has played in and has only allowed seven goals in those games. James van Riemsdyk is showing that he is a force and the rest of the team is still solid. Don’t let the loss against St. Lawrence fool you, it just happened to be an off night. This weekend the Wildcats have a big home and home series with Northeastern.

#7 Northeastern (5-0-1) LW #9: Speaking of the Huskies, Brad Thiessen and company are at it again. A sweep at Maine this weekend propelled the Huskies to a 4-0-0 Hockey East record. With eight points, the Huskies have a five point lead over second place UNH. Who would’ve thought that at this point? Nonetheless the two teams should have a great battle this weekend.

#8 Miami (3-1-2) LW Unranked: After a tough one point weekend at Vermont, the Redhawks bounced back in style against Notre Dame, sweeping the Irish in South Bend. Head coach Enrico Blasi has his team playing very well, and the combination of Cody Reichard and Connor Knapp should be solid all year. This weekend the Redhawks host Alaska in a two game series.

#9 Michigan (4-2-0) LW #6: The Wolverines went 1-1 this weekend against Niagara (a 4-2 victory) and BU (lost 7-2). Who can forget the BU loss? Well the Wolverines need to with this weekends series against a tough Ohio State squad.

#10 Minnesota State (3-1-0) LW Unranked: The Minnesota State Mavericks were off this weekend, however, they enter the top 10 after Vermont lost to Boston College. Keep an eye out on Zach Harrison, who scored a natural short-handed hat trick against North Dakota last Friday. Expect him to be a weapon on the penalty kill all year long.

Dropped Out:

Notre Dame (previously #8)
Vermont (previously #10)

The Inside Hockey Player of the Week:

Brad Thiessen, junior goaltender, Northeastern:

Thiessen had a great weekend in Maine stopping 54 of 55 Maine shots on goal, and was the backbone of the team. Thiessen has allowed eight goals in six games and has stopped 178 shots out of a possible 186 so far this year. Pretty Impressive from the Aldergrove, British Columbia native. This weekend will be another test for Thiessen as he faces James van Riemsdyk and New Hampshire.
