BOSTON- To put it in simple terms, the Boston University-Michigan game was all Terriers. Great performances by Jason Lawrence, Colin Wilson, Nick Bonino, and the rest of the team propelled the BU 7-2 victory tonight in front of 6,400 fans at Agganis Arena.
Special Teams was one of many aspects which BU dominated. The Terriers went five-for-nine on the power play and killed 10 of 12 Michigan power plays, including a key five on three situation at the 4:17 mark, which had 1:03 left on the two man advantage.
“First thing that jumps on our mind tonight, is that we were happy with our special teams,” said Terrier coach Jack Parker who was very pleased with the team’s overall effort with a man up (or a man down).
When talking about that key five-on-three situation Parker stated: “I thought it was terrific. We really shut them down pretty good there too. We didn’t give them too many good opportunities.
“Anytime you kill a five-on-three situation it really gets your team jacked up. Anytime you score on a five-on-three and don’t get negated it gets your team jacked up as well. All in all, special teams were huge the whole night.”
Other aspects that BU dominated in were face-offs, and shots on goal.
“The game wasn’t just about special teams,” Michigan head coach Red Berenson said. “They proved that as the game went on and they got stronger and we got weaker.
“Obviously it is tough playing from behind in a building like this. It’s a disappointing game for our team, but it’s a wakeup call and I realize how much better BU is right now than we are.
With four goals this year, and two tonight, Jason Lawrence has played a huge part in the Terriers early season success.
“He’s played very well all year long,” Parker said about Lawrence, who he moved to the first line with Colin Wilson and Chris Higgins in the beginning of the year. “It’s a reason why he was on the first line because from the first day of practice he has worked real hard, he deserves to be there, and he is getting a lot of ice time.”
Four of the first five games on the Terrier schedule included the Icebreaker against North Dakota and Michigan State, a trip to Durham to face the New Hampshire Wildcats, and the game tonight. BU went 3-1 in those four games.
Last year at this time BU was 0-4-1 in the end of the month, now they’re 4-1-0 heading into November.
“When we looked at the schedule, we knew how important it was,” said Lawrence about those games. “Last year we lost a couple of those games [in Alaska] and we lost a couple of non-conference games. That really came back to hurt us when it came NCAA time.
“Going into the season we really focused on playing the first game and getting things going and not get the slow start like last year.”
Said Wilson, “It was just confidence this year [going into tonight]. Last year we were 0-3 going into the Michigan game. This time we were 3-1 against real good teams. We were a little more confident, and that obviously goes a long way.”
BU plays next Saturday night at Vermont, while Michigan gets back into CCHA play next week in Ann Arbor, and will look to rebound (from tonight's defeat) against Ohio State.
