Well, a new leaf has turned in the second week of the year in college hockey, as we had some great games to watch, including Boston College and Northeastern Saturday night(which you can credit me for calling that upset) and Boston University and New Hampshire last night. So what's new in the Inside Hockey top 10? A new number one team for sure, let's check it out:
#1 Denver (3-0-0) Last Week #3
The Pioneers have indeed looked impressive in their 3-0-0 start with a solid 5-2 victory over Notre Dame last week and a convincing sweep over Wisconsin this past weekend. This coming weekend, the Pioneers will face Ohio State in two games at Magness Arena.
#2 New Hampshire (3-0-0) LW #5
Not the best weekend for the Wildcats, 1-0 over RPI and 2-1 over BU, but they'll take it. The Wildcats travel to upstate New York to face the St. Lawrence Saints on Sunday, but before that, they will host Massachusetts on Friday.
#3 Colorado College (4-0-0) LW #6
The Tigers might be No. 3 right now, however, they are winning not winning games handily. The Tigers will travel to Clarkson this weekend in a true test.
#4 Boston College (2-1-0) LW #1
The Eagles defense seems to be struggling in the early going, giving up 11 goals in three games. However, the offense has been very productive with 13 goals. BC faces Vermont on Friday at Conte Fourm.
#5 Minnesota (2-0-0) LW #9
An impressive early sweep of St. Cloud State puts Minnesota in the top five. The Gophers will travel to Madison this weekend to face the struggling Wisconsin Badgers for two games at the Kohl Center.
#6 Michigan (3-1-0) LW #2
With two defensemen out, the Wolverines will have to bear down defensively. They got a split with Northern Michigan this past weekend, and this weekend, the Wolverines host Niagara before they travel to Boston for a Saturday night showdown with BU.
#7 Boston University (3-1-0) LW #4
The Terrier defense is very solid. Six goals in four games. The offense is on and off, but it will be fixed under head coach Jack Parker. Agganis Arena should be rocking for their game against Michigan Saturday night.
#8 Notre Dame (2-1-0) LW #8
The Irish stay in their position after sweeping Sacred Heart. Jeff Jackson's squad opens up CCHA play this weekend against Miami (Ohio).
#9 Northeastern (3-0-1) LW Unranked
A very convincing weekend for the Huskies with a win on the road against Providence, and of course their upset win over then No. 1 BC. Northeastern travels to Orono for two games against Maine this weekend.
#10 Vermont (2-0-1) LW Unranked
Alright, maybe there is a little east coast bias, but Hockey East has dominated play thus far. The Cats gathered three points this weekend against Miami, knocking the Redhawks out of the top 10, and putting themselves in the top 10. This weekend, Vermont will look to get more momentum against BC in their last game in the month of October.
Out of the top 10
Miami (Ohio) (previously #7)
St. Cloud State (previously #10)
The Inside Hockey Player of the Week
Brian Foster, Junior goaltender, UNH:
Foster had great statistics this weekend, stopping 48 out of 49 shots he faced this weekend against RPI and BU, including 31 against the Terriers. So far, so good as he has only allowed two goals in three games.
