Wild One in Durham

October 19, 2008 @ 7:15 PM ET

DURHAM, N.H.- Kevin Regan, for four years he was one of the most superb goaltenders in Hockey East. This year, the question is, would the backup for two years, Brian Foster come up big for the New Hampshire Wildcats. So far, so good!

In three games, Foster has given up two goals one against Wisconsin, and one tonight against Boston University, in their 2-1 victory. Foster’s shutout came Friday against Rensselaer.

Tonight was also a night of penalties. Combined Boston University and New Hampshire had 17 power plays. Kind of tells you what the Hockey East season might be like with the two referee, two linesmen system, just implemented this year.

The majority of the penalties came in the first two periods, with UNH spending most of the second period in five-on-three situations.

“That just tells you what it’s going to be like in Hockey East,” said UNH coach Dick Umile in perspective to the crazy second period.

As far as Foster goes, he stayed cool under pressure in those five-on-three opportunities for BU.

“A couple of those situations were scary here and there, but nothing serious,” Foster said about the five-on-three play.

Even Terrier head coach Jack Parker commented on the penalties. He too saw his own team in a similar situation in the first period.

“This was a game we got to get adjusted to I guess,” Parker stated and continued “They called five straight penalties on us in the first and six on New Hampshire in the second period.

“It was constant tonight seeing more five-on-threes and if that’s how they are starting to call games, we’re going to have to start adjusting.”

BU outshot UNH 32-24 (sorry I mislead you in the blog I was reading the scoreboard at the end of the game), but, the last five seconds, you had to expect the unexpected. The Terriers were able to get two shots in those five seconds and they were quality ones.

“You got to expect that,” Foster said. “I just had to try to stay focused and battle through the last few seconds [of the game].”

Although he is a junior, and hasn’t seen much action, Foster is holding his own, and proving every opportunity he has had so far this year.

“I thought [Brian] Foster obviously proved that he’s one of the top goaltenders around, no question,” Noted Umile.

A combination of goaltending, defense, and penalties, proved to be the difference in this one.

BU’s next game sees them in another showdown with Michigan while UNH gets to go on the road for the first time in 2008-09 to St. Lawrence to play the Saints in upstate New York, but before that, UNH gets UMass-Amherst at the Whit on Friday.
