In this week’s Inside Hockey top 10, we have some shuffling in the opening weekend of college hockey. Two teams dropped from the top 10 (or top 11) and we have one newbie.
Let’s take an inside look at the top 10, and give you the first ever Inside Hockey player of the week.
#1 Boston College (1-0-0) Last Week: #1
In an exciting game against Wisconsin opening night, the Eagles were able to come back three times. The Badgers squandered three leads, and BC took advantage of it with a Cam Atkinson game winner.
This Week’s opponents: 10/17 vs. Bowling Green, 10/18 at Northeastern
#2 Michigan (2-0-0) LW #2
Wolverine nation might have been a little worried on Friday night as they were down 2-0 midway through the first against St. Lawrence. After that Michigan got going and was able to squeak by the Saints in a 4-3 victory with a Tim Miller game winner. A wild third period recapped Saturday night’s game as the game was tied at 3-3 with 4:59 left, but Michigan was able to get two more goals en route to a 5-3 win.
This week’s opponent: at Northern Michigan (10/17, 10/18)
#3 Denver (1-0-0) LW #7
The Pioneers got an opening statement with a decisive 5-2 victory over Notre Dame in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame game. Luke Salazaar scored two of the Pioneers’ four goals in the third period. DU was 2-for-8 on the power play and Notre Dame was 0-for-8.
This week’s opponent: vs. Wisconsin (10/17, 10/18)
#4 Boston University (2-0-0) LW #10
BU is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2001-02. Great defense and a solid offensive attack was the reason. Colin Wilson, the MVP of the Icebreaker got a goal and an assist, while Chris Higgins got a couple of goals. Overall this is a fast team and they love to open up the ice for more scoring chances. Expect that to be the teams style of play.
This week’s opponents: 10/17 vs. Merrimack, 10/19 at New Hampshire
#5 New Hampshire (1-0-0) LW #6
What BC didn’t do on Friday night (play defense), UNH did, in convincing style nonetheless. Wisconsin only had five shots on goal in the third period and the offense scored five unanswered goals. Brian Foster was very solid in net, making 30 saves. That UNH-BU game looks like a dandy on Sunday.
This week’s opponents: 10/17 vs. Rensselaer, 10/19 vs. BU
#6 Colorado College (2-0-0) LW #5
CC had some trouble with Alabama Huntsville. Night one was a 1-0 win and night two was a 5-3 victory. The Tigers open up conference play this weekend and will look to improve to 4-0.
This week’s opponent: 10/17, 10/18 vs. Michigan Tech
#7 Miami (Ohio) (1-0-1) LW #8
The Redhawks were involved in the first ever CCHA shootout. Even though they lost that to Ohio State (counted as a tie in the regular season standings), the team from Oxford, Ohio was able to gain a victory at home against the same Ohio State team.
This week’s opponent: 10/17, 10/18 at Vermont
#8 Notre Dame (0-1-0) LW #3
The Irish fall five spots after their loss to Denver. They get to go home this coming weekend and play in front of the Notre Dame faithful.
This week’s opponent: 10/17, 10/18 vs. Sacred Heart
#9 Minnesota (0-0-0) LW #9
The Gophers were off this weekend. They open up with conference play right off the bat.
This week’s opponent: 10/17 at St. Cloud State, 10/18 vs. St. Cloud State
#10 St. Cloud State (2-0-0) LW Unranked
The Huskies offensive attack was on display both nights against Mercyhurst. Friday and Saturday SCSU scored seven goals against Mercyhurst. Can the Huskies sustain the momentum in conference play this weekend?
Thie week’s opponent: 10/17 vs. Minnesota, 10/18 at Minnesota
Dropped Out:
North Dakota (previously #4)
Wisconsin (previously tied for 10th)
The Inside Hockey Player of the Week:
Garret Roe F St. Cloud State:
In the two victories against Mercyhurst, Roe showed his great passing ability, and he was able to score a goal in between.
