NCAA Update: August 8

August 08, 2008 @ 9:55 AM ET

On the last NCAA Update, we had some coaching shuffles in Hockey East, we learned that Seth Appert coach at Rensselaer, would be going to Europe for a week in August, and Ethan Werek, a Boston University recruit for 2009, is going to prep in the USHL for a year.

This week, there is more to talk about, including, a former Big Red player going back to Cornell as an assistant coach, a petition going around to make Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO, a Division I hockey team, a former home to the World Junior Championships is bidding again for the games in 2011 and a new assistant captain has been named at Boston College.

Cornell Graduate Returns Home:

Casey Jones, a member of the class of 1990 at Cornell University, is returning to Ithaca to be the associate head coach at the University according to The Ithaca Journal. The alum spent the previous 13 years at Ohio State in the same position and was in charge of recruiting in Columbus.

Jones was also an assistant coach at Clarkson for two years, and also spent two seasons at Cornell.

The former great for the Big Red averaged a point per game in 112 career contests, and was the team captain in his senior campaign. Though Jones was drafted by the Boston Bruins, he never played a minute in the NHL. Jones replaces Brent Brekke, who left to take the same position at Miami University.

Colorado State Alum gets a petition in hope for a D-1 Hockey team:

Brett Tatman, president of the petition to make Colorado State a Division I hockey team. As of August 1, 380 people have signed the petition. Good start considering the petition was created on July 29.

Anyway hope for the best here, and possibly we can add another school for the sport of college hockey.

Ralph Englestad Arena bids for 2011 World Junior Hockey Championships:

Reported by Brad Elliott Schlossman of The Grand Forks Herald, the Ralph Englestad Arena, home of the North Dakota Fighting Sioux, is bidding for another WJC event. “The Ralph”, had the privilege of hosting the championships in 2004-05.

Tim Filangieri named assistant captain for the Eagles:

Boston College defensemen Tim Filanieri has been named the second assistant captain at The Heights, filling in for Nathan Gerbe, who signed a pro contract a few weeks after his brilliant performance in the Frozen Four. The 6-foot-2 defensemen from Islip Terrace, New York has played in 122 career games for the Eagles and has tallied three goals and nine assists for a total of 12 points.

And let’s end this week’s edition of the NCAA Update with some Hall of Fame news from the University of New Hampshire.

Former UNH great Ty Conklin (class of 2001), who was one of the greatest goaltenders in Wildcat history, has been inducted into the Schools athletic Hall of Fame. Conklin is a two time All-American, a co Hockey East player of the year, and now is looking for a Stanley Cup as he signed a deal with the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings.

With the latest update, we are now 63 days away from face-off.
