WILMINGTON, Mass.- On Wednesday at the Bruins Developmental Camp, the first full day of skating was held. The event, usually held for first year players (or for the Providence Bruins), had a good bit of news, and it wasn’t from any rookie.
Patrice Bergeron, who had suffered a serious concussion early in the 2007-08 season, seems to be back in full form. Bergeron also practiced Tuesday along with fellow teammate Manny Fernandez, who was also injured for most of last season.
“All the headaches and the symptoms were gone in April,” noted Bergeron on Tuesday. “I had hopes of playing, but, the doctors had the right decision in the long run.
“The biggest difference I think is growing better physically: I’ve put some weight back on and am in better shape cardio-wise because I’ve been working out longer.”
Don Sweeney, the Director of Player Development and head of the Bruins developmental camp, saw some positive things from both Bergeron and Fernandez.
“To watch them go out and train outside [while doing the same drills that the dev campers went through]- these kids realize that, they’ll take notice of that. That’s where they want to be and that’s a stage hopefully that they’ll all get to.”
Not to take anything away from Bergeron or Fernandez, but, we got some rookies as well for this camp. The roster is filled of first and second year players such as recently signed free agent Blake Wheeler, 2008 first round draft pick Joe Colborne and 2007 first round pick Zach Hamill.
