AHL Update: July 4

With free agency in full swing in the AHL, several players have already signed on with new teams. The Bears and Sound Tigers made the biggest splash in week one. Here’s an update from around the AHL.

Washington Capitals and Hershey Bears Sign Keith Aucoin

The Washington Capitals, parent club of the Hershey Bears, announced Thursday the singing of forward Keith Aucoin. Aucoin, 29, split last season between the Albany River Rats and Carolina Hurricanes. In 38 games with the River Rats last season, he recorded eight goals and 37 assists for 45 points. In 38 games with Carolina, Aucoin recorded five goals and eight assists for 10 points. Aucoin has appeared in 435 career AHL games with Lowell, Providence, Cincinnati and Albany; he has recorded 134 goals and 299 assists for 433 points.

Manitoba Moose Sign Goaltender Karl Goehring

The Manitoba Moose announced Thursday that they have signed goaltender Karl Goehring to an AHL contract. Goehring spent last season with the Norfolk Admirals, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Syracuse Crunch.

Goehring, 29, compiled a 15-9-2 record with a 2.20 GAA in 29 games last season. Goehring has appeared in 247 career AHL games posting a 104-103-20 record with a 2.66 GAA with Syracuse, San Antonio, Milwaukee, Norfolk, and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Islanders and Sound Tigers Sign Iggulden and Skinner

The New York Islanders, parent club of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, announced Wednesday the signing of 2008 All-Stars Mike Iggulden and Brett Skinner. Iggulden, 25, spent last season with the Worcester Sharks and appeared in 78 games for the Sharks, setting a career-high 66 points with 29 goals and 37 assists. In 234 career AHL games, Iggulden has totaled 82 goals and 90 assists for 172 points with the Rochester Americans, Cleveland Barons and Sharks.

Skinner, 25, spent last season with the Providence Bruins. Skinner set career-highs for goals (7), assists (40) and points (47) to pace all Bruins defensemen. In four AHL seasons with the Bruins, Manitoba Moose, Portland Pirates and Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights, Skinner totaled 17 goals and 79 assists for 96 points in 195 AHL games.

Islanders and Sound Tigers Sign Goaltender Yann Danis

The New York Islanders, parent club of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, announced Wednesday the signing of goaltender Yann Danis to a one-year, two-way contract for the 2008-09 season. Danis was a member of Hamilton’s 2007 Calder Cup Championship team.

Danis, 27, spent last season with the Hamilton Bulldogs and posted a record of 11-19-4 with a 3.28 GAA in 38 games. In 176 career AHL games with the Bulldogs, Danis posted an 81-67-18 record with a 2.78 GAA and .908 SV%.

Capitals and Bears Sign Graham Mink and Tyler Sloan

The Washington Capitals, parent club of the Hershey Bears, announced Wednesday that they have signed forward Graham Mink and defensemen Tyler Sloan for the upcoming season. Mink was a member of Hershey’s 2006 Calder Cup championship team.

Mink, 29, returns to Hershey after spending the previous two seasons with the Worcester Sharks. Mink appeared in 71 games last season and posted 24 goals and 31 assists for 55 points. For his career, Mink has appeared in 433 AHL games with the Sharks, Bears and Portland Pirates; he has posted 151 goals and 154 assists for 305 points.

Sloan, 27, has spent the past two seasons anchoring Hershey’s defense. Sloan appeared in 56 games last season for Hershey and recorded one goal and seven assists for eight points. For his career, Sloan has played in 252 AHL games with Hershey, Syracuse and Manitoba; he has recorded seven goals and 23 assists for 30 points.

Flyers and Phantoms Sign Nate Raduns and Sean Curry

The Philadelphia Flyers, parent club of the Philadelphia Phantoms, announced Wednesday the signing of forward Nate Raduns to a one-year contract and defensemen Sean Curry to a two-year contract. Raduns, 24, spent last season with the Worcester Sharks. Raduns recorded 12 goals and 15 assists for 27 points in 56 games during his first season in the AHL. His 12 goals tied for the Worcester team lead among rookies.

Curry, 26, spent the past three seasons with the Providence Bruins. Last season, he posted career numbers with 13 goals and 25 assists for 38 points in 72 games. Curry also recorded a career best 139 penalty minutes last season. For his career, he has appeared in 378 career AHL games with Lowell and Providence and posted 25 goals and 54 assists for 79 points and 636 penalty minutes.

Calgary Flames and Quad City Flames Sign Pete Vandermeer

The Calgary Flames, parent club of the Quad City Flames, announced Wednesday that they have signed forward Peter Vandermeer to a one-year, two-way contract. The announcement came hours after the Flames announced the signing of Pete’s younger brother, Jim Vandermeer.

Vandermeer, 32, spent last season with the San Antonio Rampage and saw his first action in the NHL with the Phoenix Coyotes. Vandermeer appeared in 38 games last season with San Antonio and recorded two goals and six assists for eight points and 332 penalty minutes. For his career, Vandermeer has appeared in 51 AHL games with Rochester, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Providence, Philadelphia, Grand Rapids, Hamilton, Hershey and San Antonio; he has compiled 53 goals and 67 assists for 120 points. His 2,496 career penalty minutes rank third all-time in the AHL.

Nashville Predators and Milwaukee Admirals Sign Goaltender Drew MacIntyre

The Nashville Predators, parent club of the Milwaukee Admirals, announced Wednesday that they have signed All-Star goaltender Drew MacIntyre to a one-year contract. MacIntyre spent the past two seasons with the Manitoba Moose.

MacIntyre, 25, appeared in 46 games last season with Manitoba and posted a 25-18-2 record with a 2.32 GAA. In 124 career AHL games with Grand Rapids and Manitoba, MacIntyre has posted 64-42-4 record. He was the winning goaltender of the 2008 AHL All-Star Game. MacIntyre made AHL history on February 20, becoming just the ninth goaltender in league history to be credited with a goal. He was credited with the game-winning goal in overtime against the Chicago Wolves.
