The 2008 Calder Cup Playoffs have moved into the Division Finals, and each team is looking to advance to the Conference Finals. Each series features teams that have the ability to win at anytime. Here's an update from around the American Hockey League.

*Game 5: Phantoms @ Penguins, May 9 7:05 pm
*Game 6: Penguins @ Phantoms, TBD
*Game 7: Phantoms @ Penguins, TBD

Game 1 Summary: The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins were a hot team at home, but the Phantoms were the better team Thursday night in Wilkes-Barre. Scott Munroe was just about perfect in net allowing only two Penguin goals on 33 shots. His counterpart, John Curry, struggled to start the game by allowing three goals on the first nine shots. Stefan Ruzicka scored two goals and added an assist to cap off a three point night. Jared Ross had a two point game with a goal and an assist. Wilkes-Barre’s Kurtis McLean had a two point game with two assists.

Providence Bruins vs. Portland Pirates

Bruins lead series 2-0

Game 1: Bruins 4, Pirates 0
Game 2: Bruins 7, Pirates 1

*Game 7: Pirates @ Bruins, May 10 7:05

Game 2 Summary: If the Providence Bruins weren’t on the AHL radar before, they are now after a commanding 7-1 win over the Portland Pirates Sunday afternoon. Providence used a four goal third period to pull away from Portland and take a 2-0 series lead. Providence got three goals from Martin Karsums and two from Petteri Nokelainen. Tuukka Rask was once again amazing in net for Providence stopping 18 of 19 shots. Power plays were at a minimum in Game 2 with each team receiving only two; Providence converted on one. Goaltender J.S. Aubin is injured and hasn’t appeared in the first two games for Portland.

Toronto Marlies vs. Syracuse Crunch

Game 1: Crunch @ Marlies, May 2 7:30 pm
Game 2: Crunch @ Marlies, May 4 4 pm
Game 3: Marlies @ Crunch, May 6 7 pm
Game 4: Marlies @ Crunch, May 7 7 pm
*Game 5: Crunch @ Marlies, May 9 7:30 pm
*Game 6: Marlies @ Crunch, May 10 7:30 pm
*Game 7: Crunch @ Marlies, May 12 7:30 pm
* - if necessary

Series Preview: If this series comes down to special teams, Syracuse will have the advantage. Toronto’s penalty killing was dismal in the first round and Syracuse needs to attack every time they have a power play. How Toronto plays offensively will also dictate the outcome of this series. If Toronto gets consistent production, they will win. If not, Syracuse will be advancing to the Western Conference finals. Either way you slice it, Toronto and Syracuse are set for a battle for the ages.

Chicago Wolves vs. Rockford IceHogs

Wolves lead series 1-0

Game 1: Wolves 4, IceHogs 1
Game 2: IceHogs @ Wolves, May 3 8 pm
Game 3: Wolves @ IceHogs, May 4 5 pm
Game 4: Wolves @ IceHogs, May 7 8 pm
*Game 5: IceHogs @ Wolves, May 9 5 pm
*Game 6: Wolves @ IceHogs, May 11 5 pm
*Game 7: IceHogs @ Wolves, May 13 8 pm
* - if necessary

Game 1 Summary: The Chicago Wolves used special teams in Game 1 to take control and go on for the 4-1 win. Chicago got three power play goals in seven chances and that was enough to take care of Rockford. The Wolves got excellent goaltending from Ondrej Pavelec, who stopped 29 of 30 shots and didn’t allow a goal until 4:05 remaining. Joel Kwiatkowski recorded a two point game for Chicago with two goals. Jason Krog, the regular season leading scorer, posted three assists.
