The Devils were in Carolina on Thursday night. They took home their 12th road victory after they defeated the Hurricanes 4-1.
During the first period, the Devils began the scoring with a goal from Travis Zajac at 12:24, his 8th goal of the season. This goal started off with an attempted tip-in from Zach Parise, which was denied by Carolina's Cam Ward. Zajac found the rebound and tucked it over Ward's pad.
Just moments after Zajac’s goal, David Clarkson found himself tangled up with a couple of Hurricanes. After he became untangled, Mike Commodore came up from behind and shoved him, forcing him to fall face down on the ice. Clarkson took this to be a challenge, but a linesman broke it up before it even began. Both players were assessed two-minute penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct. Since neither one were able to scrap, they waited until the end of the period, when the officials were not looking and started fighting. Clarkson was given a roughing penalty for starting the scrap and a fighting penalty, while Commodore was issued the lone fighting penalty.
The middle period started off as a four-on-four from the Commodore/Clarkson fighting penalties. The Hurricanes were given a 2-minute man advantage for the roughing penalty. Dennis Seidenberg attempted a shot on Brodeur, which was stopped, but Keith Aucoin found the puck and snapped it in behind the skate of Brodeur at 2:41, tying up the game. Later, Devils' Andy Greene attempted a goal that was waved off at 15:51 because Ward was pushed into the net by Brian Gionta. But luck was on the side of the Devils Thursday night as Patrik Elias slapped a shot on Ward and found the net in the upper corner, scoring the Devils second goal of the game at 17:59.
In the final period, Gionta scored a power play goal off of a wrist-shot from Greene at 12:54, his thirteenth goal of the season. Sergei Brylin finished off the scoring at 18:08 from a deflection off of a John Madden shot, ending the game 4-1, Devils.
This win marked Martin Brodeur’s 517th career win. He has had 18 wins in his past 22 contests, 4 of which were shutouts. New Jersey has won 18 of its last 24 games.
The Devils play against the Sabres on Saturday in Buffalo. Their next home game is on Wednesday against the New York Islanders. This will commence their 5 out of 6 games home schedule. The Devils remain one point ahead of the Pittsburgh Penguins for first place in the Atlantic Division.
