Devils Repeat Shootout Win

Not so long ago, the Buffalo Sabres visited the Prudential Center and were taken to the shootout which led to a Devils' victory. On Tuesday night, the Devils and Sabres found themselves in the shootout once again and the Devils walked away the victor, 2-1.

Andy Greene started off the scoring in the first period at 16:23 off a pass from Patrik Elias that found its way past the back door of Ryan Miller during the power play. This was his second goal of the season and the first power play goal in the last nine contests against the Buffalo Sabres. The middle period went scoreless with only 14 shots on goal (Buffalo 9 - Devils 5).

In the third stanza, the Sabres came back and were able to tie up the game at 18:13 from some incredible passing between Clarke MacArthur, Jason Pominville, and Jochen Hecht. As they took the puck out of their zone, they picked up speed, passing the puck between the Devils defensemen. Their ability to confuse Brodeur with all of the passing down to the net gave Pominville the opportunity to tip-in the last pass, pushing the game into overtime.

In the shootout, Patrik Elias and Brian Gionta were able to get the puck through the legs of Miller, sealing the win and two points for the Devils, with Kotalik being the only Sabres player to beat Brodeur.

"Patty tonight had been playing well, and we thought let's let him do it, let him shoot tonight," coach Brent Sutter said. "We may not have used him as much in the past, but we thought tonight was a good night for him to shoot simply because he played a good game again."

The NHL announced earlier on Tuesday that Martin Brodeur was selected by the fans to be the starting goaltender for the Eastern Conference in the NHL’s All-Star game on January 27, 2008.

The Devils are still one point ahead of the second seeded Pittsburgh Penguins for the Atlantic Division lead. With the Rangers loss Tuesday night, they have fallen to last place in the division, and out of the playoff berth, which is still a tight contest between the Atlantic Division rivalries. The Devils head to Carolina on Thursday, game time begins at 7:00 p.m.
