The international scene focuses on the women’s side this week as the Canadian U18 team travels to Ottawa for a three game series. This season marks the debut of the first ever U18 teams for both countries.

The season is underway; the international tournaments have begun. Team Sweden won the 2007 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka tournament with a 3-2 win over Finland on Sunday. In the bronze medal game, Russia edged Canada 5-4.

Lewiston MAINEiacs goalie Peter Delmas, Saint John Sea Dogs rearguard Yann Sauve and forward Chris Doyle (PEI Rocket), were among those named to the Canadian Under-18 team that will compete in the 2007 Memorial of Ivan Hlinka.

It’s hard to believe that another hockey season is almost upon us again, and on Wednesday, the QMJHL August trade period got under way and will run until noon August 27th.

With the first pick overall in the CHL import draft, the Edmonton Oil Kings selected 6’ 2”, 198 pound center and Brno, Czech Republic native Tomas Vincour. Last season, Vincour played for Kometa HC.

The NHL Entry Draft took place last weekend, and four members of the QMJHL were picked. With the seventh pick overall, the Blue Jackets chose Halifax Mooseheads star forward Jakub Voracek; he was the first player chosen from the Q.

With the first pick in the QMJHL draft on Saturday, the Saint John Sea Dogs chose Laval-Bourassa defenseman Simon Despres. With the second pick, the Drummondville Voltigeurs chose Trois-Rivières forward Philippe Lefebvre.

In their sixth year of existence, the Vancouver Giants won the Memorial Cup on their home ice Sunday with a 3-1 win over their WHL rivals, the Medicine Hat Tigers, in front of 16,281 fans at the Pacific Coliseum.

Kings prospect Jonathan Bernier and the QMJHL champion Lewiston MAINEiacs beat the WHL champions Medicine Hat Tigers 3-1 on Saturday, but on Sunday, Lewiston lost to Vancouver 2-1.

The National Women’s Hockey League announced last week that play involving the Eastern Division teams (Etobicoke, Mississauga, Brampton, Montreal, Quebec, Ottawa, and Oakville) will be suspended for the 2007-08 season.

The Lewiston MAINEiacs completed a four game sweep of the Val-d’Or Foreurs on Wednesday night, and Kings prospect Jonathan Bernier was named the MVP and was also the recipient of the CHL’s ADT goaltender of the week honors.

Bowdoin College has announced that former Team Canada captain Stacy Wilson will be their new head coach next season. Since 2001, the Polar Bears are 120-33-9, have won two NESCAC Championships and earned four NCAA Tournament berths.

The Lewiston MAINEiacs are in the President’s Cup final for the first time and they are half of the way to the championship thanks to a pair of victories over the Val-d’Or Foreurs this weekend.

The Lewiston MAINEiacs and the Val-d’Or Foreurs will play off for the QMJHL’s Presidents Cup as Lewiston swept the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies and Val-d’Or beat the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles in seven games.

The Rouyn-Noranda Huskies completed the final piece of the puzzle on Tuesday night as they moved into the semifinals with a 4-3 win over Drummondville to take their series in seven games.

Even with Halifax’s elimination, right winger Jakub Voracek still leads both the overall playoff scoring race and the rookie playoff scoring race with seven goals and 17 assists for 24 points in 12 games played.

Team Canada reclaimed the world championship they lost to the United States in 2005 with a 5-1 trouncing over the Americans in front of 15,003 fans at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, MB.

L.A. Kings prospect Jonathan Bernier and the Lewiston MAINEiacs showed why they are one of the QMJHL's top teams this season, as they completed a four-game sweep of their first round playoff series to move on to the next round.

On Tuesday, USA Hockey announced the U.S. World Championship team will take part in the World Championship in Winnipeg and Selkirk, MB from April 3rd to the 10th. Sarah Parsons was amongst those making the cut.

Val-d’Or Foreurs captain Kristopher Letang was named the recipient of the Kevin-Lowe Trophy awarded to the top defensive defenseman. Letang had 14 goals (four game-winners), and 38 helpers, and was a +19 in 40 games.

The University of Wisconsin Badgers and Plattsburgh are the NCAA DI and DIII champions, respectively. Also at the NCAA Frozen Four, Harvard forward Julie Chu was given the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award for the 2006-07 season.

The countdown to championship weekend reached its climax last weekend as the final four teams were determined to take part in the NCAA DI Frozen Four in Lake Placid NY this coming weekend.

On Monday, two defensemen--Lewiston’s Chad Denny and Rouyn-Noranda's Ivan Vishnevsky--were named the offensive and defensive players for the week ending March 11th.

USA Hockey has announced that Harvard forward Julie Chu, Wisconsin forward Sara Bauer and Mercyhurst forward Meghan Agosta are the three finalists for the Patty Kazmaier award to be presented at the Frozen Four in Lake Placid.

Cape Breton forward James Sheppard, Val-d’Or defenseman Kristopher Letang (a Penguins prospect), and St. John’s defenseman T. J. Brennan are the offensive, defensive, and rookie players of the month for February.

On April 3rd, the 2007 World Championships get underway in Winnipeg and Selkirk, MB, and last Thursday, Hockey Canada and Canada’s National Team GM/Head Coach Melody Davidson announced the 20-player roster.

Last Wednesday, the ECAC East Administrators decided on realignment for the league. Norwich University and Plymouth State University will join the ECAC next season. This past December, Rochester Institute of Technology joined the ECAC West for geographical and travel reasons.

Team Canada has once again won gold, this time at the World University Games as they beat Team Russia 3-1 on Saturday. Scoring for Team Canada was Rob Hennigar with two and Scott Hotham with one. Eight former members of the QMJHL played on Team Canada.

Val-d’Or Foreurs forward Jérôme Samson and PEI Rocket goaltender Antoine Lafleur were named the offensive and defensive players for the week ending January 21st. Samson netted six goals, including four on the power-play, and assisted on three others in three games.

Victoriaville Tigres forward Benoît Doucet and Gatineau Olympiques defenseman Martin Fréchette were named the offensive and defensive players for the week ending January 14th. Doucet scored seven goals, added four assists, and had a +8 rating in three games.

Fresh off the World Junior Championship win by the boys last week comes another trophy that Hockey Canada can add to their collection, as the Canadian Women’s U22 team won their fifth straight European Air Canada Cup with a 6-1 win over host Germany in Sunday’s gold medal game.

Team Canada won their third straight World Junior Hockey Championship on Friday with a 4-2 win over Russia. Team USA won the bronze medal with a 2-1 win over Sweden. For Canada, Val-d’Or defenseman Kristopher Letang was the top Canadian with six assists for a tie for 20th place overall.

The Canadian National U22 team left New Year’s Eve for Ravensburgh, Germany where they will take part in the 2007 European Air Canada Cup, January 3-7. The Canadian roster is the same one that played in a three-game exhibition series against the USA in Ottawa in August.

The annual festival known as the World Junior Hockey Championships kicked off on Tuesday with two huge upsets as Germany defeated the USA and Belarus edged Finland. Meanwhile, Luc Bourdon and Brad Marchand scored the only two goals in Canada’s 2-0 shutout of Sweden.

This week was the beginning of the trading period in the QMJHL and there were plenty of deals made. St. John’s celebrated their weekend sweep of Gatineau by sending their fourth round draft pick in 2008 to Drummondville for Gatineau native goalie Pierre-Alexandre Marion.

There was much anticipation and excitement in Calgary on Friday as Hockey Canada announced the Team Canada roster for the World Junior Hockey Championships that will take place from December 26, 2006 to January 5, 2007 in Ledsank/Mora Sweden.

Christmas is a time for holidays and festivals, and hockey certainly makes the most of that as USA Hockey announced this week that 42 of America’s top players have been invited to Lake Placid, N.Y. for USA Hockey’s annual holiday camp from December 26th - January 2nd.

Well it is that time of the year again. Yes it is Christmas and with it not only brings the yuletide cheer but also the annual rite of Christmas known as the World Junior Hockey tournament. Eight members of the QMJHL have been invited to take part in the evaluation camp, which will take place in Calgary, AB from December 10th-15th.

This past Friday, the QMJHL announced that Acadie-Bathurst forward Mathieu Perreault, Lewiston MAINEiacs goaltender Jonathan Bernier and his teammate, forward David Perron, were named the offensive, defensive, and rookie players of the month for November.

On Monday, Val-d’Or Foreurs defenseman Kristopher Letang and Rouyn-Noranda Huskies goaltender Jean-Philippe Levasseur were named the offensive and defensive players for the week ending November 26th. Letang scored four goals, added two helpers, and maintained a healthy +3 rating.

On Monday, Quebec Remparts forward Angelo Esposito and PEI Rocket goaltender Antoine Lafleur were named the offensive and defensive players for the week ending November 19th. Esposito scored four goals, added seven assists, and had a plus-three rating.

Acadie-Bathurst forward Thomas Beauregard and Cape Breton Screaming Eagles goaltender Ondrej Pavelec were named the offensive and defensive players for the week ending November 12th. Denise Smith has this and more in her latest QMJHL report.

On Thursday, the QMJHL announced that Gatineau forward Viatcheslav Trukhno, Cape Breton defenseman Oskars Bartulis, and Halifax Mooseheads forward Jakub Voracek were named the offensive, defensive and rookie players for October. Denise has this story and more in her latest QMJHL Report.

On Monday, Gatineau Olympiques forward Viatcheslav Trukhno and Halifax Mooseheads goaltender Jeremy Duchesne were named the offensive and defensive players for the week ending October 8th. Denise Smith brings us the latest from the QMJHL.

On Monday, the QMJHL announced that Gatineau forward Claude Giroux, Lewiston defenseman Chad Denny, and Val-d’Or forward Julius Sinkovic are the offensive, defensive, and rookie of the month award winners respectively for September.

On Wednesday, the Canadian Hockey League and the NHL announced that the 2007 Home Hardware CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game will be played at Quebec’s Colisee Pepsi Wednesday, January 17, at 7 p.m.

On Monday, Gatineau Olympiques forward Claude Giroux and Moncton Wildcats goaltender Nicola Riopel were named offensive and defensive players respectively, for the week ending September 17th. Giroux scored four goals and three assists, had a +5 rating and was involved in seven of his team’s eight goals so far this season.

September 11, 2006 marks the beginning of a new week in the QMJHL and is also the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks. On that day, the NHL lost two scouts as Los Angeles Kings scouts Garnet “Ace” Bailey and Mark Bavis lost their lives when American Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

On August 24th, QMJHL Commissioner Gilles Courteau announced the new Board of Governors Executive Committee at a press conference held at Hôtel Rimouski during the General Annual Assembly of the Board of Governors.

The QMJHL preseason games kicked off on Thursday night with one game as Bathurst defeated Saint John 4-2. On Friday night, Cape Breton defeated St. John’s 8-3, Halifax defeated PEI 6-4, Moncton defeated Lewiston 4-3 in a shootout, Baie-Comeau defeated Quebec 9-5, Chicoutimi defeated Rimouski 6-3, and Victoriaville defeated Shawinigan 4-2.

On Monday July 31st, the Acadie-Bathurst Titan announced that Petit-Rocher native Charles Leblanc will be their new assistant coach and will serve under second-year head coach John Chabot.
