Bruins Re-Sign Recchi

July 02, 2009 @ 12:10 PM ET

According to TSN, Mark Recchi has re-signed with the Boston Bruins for one-year at $1 million. Recchi loved his experience in Boston after being traded there from the Lightning on trade deadline day and was not shy this offseason about expressing his desire to stay in Boston.

Moreover, he was a welcome addition to Boston's forward corps and brought a much needed presence in front of the net. Recchi should be an extremely valuable veteran addition for the full season and definitely plays the game the right way. Recchi's signing also implies that there are now two forward spots left for three players: Chuck Kobasew, Marco Sturm and Phil Kessel.

Kessel is the star of the group but is currently a restricted free agent. That said, it is up to General Manager Peter Chiarelli to decide whether he wants to trade one of Sturm or Kobasew or dish out money to Kessel.

Without Kessel, Chiarelli loses his best goal scorer and Marc Savard's right winger. The best move for the Bruins at this point would probably be to part ways with Chuck Kobasew to free up cap room and make signing Kessel easier.

Sturm over Kobasew

Good Argument Alex on Kobasew. I disagree a little bit on this one. If you move Sturm you clear a little more cap space about $1 million and I'm sure there are some teams who will take his salary. However, with that being said Kobasew would bring a little more interest to other teams if he was on the trading block, mainly because Sturm was injured for the majority of the season. Chiarelli might try to move Sturm first over Kobasew just based on the salary cap but we will wait and see.
