UND vs. St. Cloud State game blog
December 13, 2008 @ 7:52 PM ET
Game Summary:
UND got the sweep in this one behind scoring all over the line up. Of UND's 18 skaters on the ice tonight, 14 of them tallied atleast one point. Defenseman Brad Miller had three assists and defenseman Jake Marto notched a goal and an assist. UND goaltender Brad Eidsness did just enough, making a few key saves down the stretch in the third with the Huskies on the power play to get the win. UND has won its 4th straight game as well as 5 of 6
Player of the game: Defenseman Jake Marto (1g, 1a)
Play of the game: David Toews' goal just 42 seconds after an SCSU power play goal to make it a two goal game again in the third period
Three Stars:
1) Jake Marto (1g, 1a), UND
2) Brad Miller (3a), UND
3) David Toews (1g), UND
3rd Period
Not indicative of the 7-4 final score, the third period was a very close one and came down to an answering goal by the Sioux after SCSU made it a one goal game just 5:17 into the period when Ryan Lasch fired one past Eidsness on the power play. UND answered right back just 42 seconds later after gathering a SCSU turnover, Jason Gregoire fed a pass to David Toews and Toews beat Dunn low making it 6-4. The Huskies had two power play opportunities while trying to get back into the game that the Sioux killed with ease. Derrick LaPoint was credited with an empty net goal with one second to go when SCSU forward Garrett Roe slammed a shot off the half boards and the puck trickled into the open net.
2nd Period
After an explosive first period that saw SCSU pull starting goalie Jase Weslosky in favor of sophomore Dan Dunn to start the second, it turned much more defensive in the 2nd. UND put the defensive pressure on the Huskies in the first 10 minutes of the period, only allowing one shot, but then the Huskies started to find ways to get the puck in the Sioux zone. SCSU made it a one goal game at 15:57 when Brent Borgen put in a rebound after a scrum in front, to the back of the net silencing the UND crowd. UND then got a big break in getting a 5-on-3 power play and converted with just five seconds to go in the period when defenseman Chay Genoway fired a shot off the right post that deflected to freshman Brett Hextall. Hextall slapped the rebound into the wide open net making it a 5-3 game going into the intermission.
What to expect in the third:
UND carries 56 seconds of power play time into the third period. If they can get a tally early on in the period, it will be tough for the Huskies to play catch up three goals down. The Huskies carried the momentum for the end of the third period before giving up the goal two men down. Look for them to try to get the puck deep and get pucks on Eidsness as they only have 13 shots total through two periods.
1st Period
Again in this game, it was a crazy, up-and-down-the-ice-action first period in this one with 4 goals in the first five minutes and 6 total as the Sioux lead 4-2 after one. UND got on the board just 1:08 into the period on a great sniper shot by captain Ryan Duncan and SCSU tied it just under two minutes later on a tip in, one-timer goal by Garrett Raboin knotting it at two. The scoring didn't slow at all as UND score just 52 seconds later as Jake Marto puts in a rebound goal after a blast from the point making it 2-1. UND kept scoring and got another on goal, this one on the power play as junior Chris VandeVelde snapped a personal 9 game goalless streak by tipping in a Marto point shot. Then it went to 4-1 UND as junior Darcy Zajac slid a rebound off a Matt Watkins blast past Weslosky. SCSU made it a game again going into the second scoring a goal off a turnover as Travis Novak ripped a shot above Eisness's glove just over two minutes to go in the period.
What to expect in the 2nd:
As I said in the preview, UND has been scoring in bunches and if Weslosky was to give up a couple of rebounds early, the Sioux could get going. That pretty much happend to a T in the first, but the problem was that Eidsness wasn't stellar in the period and the Huskies tallied a couple as well. After 6 goals in the first, I'd be surprised to see that many in the second. Expect both teams to come out more defensively minded in the period.
Preview:
The Sioux took the first game last night paced by two third period goals and Ryan Martens 2nd two goal game in 3 games to get the 3-2 win. SCSU goaltender Jase Weslosky had an iffy start in net as he got a piece of each of UND's goals last night and was pulled in the third period. Expect the junior to be pumped up for this one. UND out played the Huskies through much of the game and dominated the third period. A team that has become known for its second half runs is starting to get hot. Expect UND to come out of the gates quickly and try to get an early one to shake Weslosky once again.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jase Weslosky G, SCSU--One game after being pulled in the third, expect Weslosky to play well in net as the Huskies look for the split
PREDICTION: 4-3 UND--If the Sioux can get to Weslosky early, UND has been scoring in bunches lately and will continue to do so
