Devils vs. 'Canes, 1-0

April 23, 2009 @ 9:57 PM ET

Why the Devils won: The need to bounce back from a loss delivered in the final second in regulation during Game 4 was detrimental on home ice for the Devils during Game 5. What better way to be redeemed for that little mistake that cost the game by having a shutout win? The Devils relied heavily on Martin Brodeur in between the pipes as David Clarkson was the only Devil to get a goal past Cam Ward. The shutout win was an important one for Brodeur who left the ice angrily after that last goal by the ‘Canes in Game 4. Devils have a way of forgetting about a loss and moving on beyond that loss to focus on the new game. They never carry a negative thought process forward. That has been their winning formula.

Why Carolina lost: Trying to defeat a team that is the mirror-image of yourself is a difficult task. The Devils and the ‘Canes are completely identical in their style of play. Cam Ward was a tough opponent for the Devils as Ward stopped 41 shots on goal. His performance has been outstanding, but both goaltenders have been performing amazingly well. The offense is not to blame in this game after the ‘Canes delivered 44 shots on Brodeur. David Clarkson from the Devils just got a lucky break in front of the net.

Key Moment: With a slapshot from blueliner Andy Greene, David Clarkson getting a piece of that shot in the second period to score the first goal of the game changed the atmosphere of the game. Throw in the first shutout in the series and the Devils may have just determined who will take the first round.

What's next for both teams: Both teams head to Carolina for Game 6. If the series continues on the same path it’s going with both teams taking a turn at winning, then expect the ‘Canes to take Game 6 and the Devils to take Game 7.
