'Canes vs. NJ Devils, 4-3
April 28, 2009 @ 11:04 PM ET
Why Carolina won: The Hurricanes trailed throughout the game, but in the final two
minutes of the game, they came back with such fierceness that the only answer to their dilemma came with a goal from Jussi Jokinen to tie up the game followed by the game winner from Eric Staal with 32 seconds left in the game. Carolina stunned everyone. It literally left everyone speechless after the game. This upset is the kind of upset that is needed for the 'Canes to head into the next round. It's the kind of win that makes them look like the scariest team in the league.
Why Devils lost: Getting the first couple of goals against Cam Ward early in the first was essential in breaking down the 'Canes. The Devils dominated with a 3-2 lead through the majority of the game, but that team that humiliated them in the past arrived in the final 1:20 of the game. During that time, the Devils had started to let their game slip away from them. "I'm just pretty shocked," coach Brent Sutter said after the game. "Everyone's pretty disappointed. It's as tough as a loss that can be had. It's unexplainable."
Key Moment: Jussi Jokinen's goal to tie up the game, followed by Eric Staal's game
deciding goal with only mere seconds left made the final minute the most surreal moment of the series. "I've never had a game end like that," coach Paul Maurice said. "That was fantastic."
What's next for both teams: The Devils start cleaning out their lockers and start their summer vacations. The Hurricanes go on to face the Boston Bruins in Round 2. Bruins will have home ice advantage as the series opens in Boston.
