The Devils bench celebrates after a goal.jpg

The Bruins fell short Thursday night against the Devils. Mounting a three goal third period comeback, The Bruins didn't have enough to hold off the Devils in the overtime period. Jamie Langenbrunner netted the game winner for the Devils, who move to 31-15.

Marty's Historic Night

Out of all the photos in this collection that caught my eye, the one that happens to be the funniest is the one where I caught on camera a little thievery on the ice.

In one of the random group shots I got on the ice, I captured Brendan Shanahan trying to steal Martin Brodeur's catching glove. He told us after the game that he had tried to hide the glove under his jersey, but his pregnant belly was caught and he had to give the glove back.

He said he was trying to steal the glove so that he could sell it on Ebay. With all of the stories I've been hearing about Shanny these past few weeks, including hijacking other players Wikipedias (it hasn't been proven yet that he's the culprit), it would seem befitting that he is a New Jersey Devil again, because he's such a little devil. He's completely up to no good.

Here are a few of the photos from Marty's night on St. Patrick's Day.

Captains Jamie Langenbrunner and Zdeno Chara meet in the corner.jpg

The Boston Bruins hosted the New Jersey Devils in a Sunday afternoon game on March 22nd, 2009. The Bruins scored furiously in the second period, winning by a final of 4-1 and in the process clinched the Northeast Division. Inside Hockey's Peter Keeling was on site and took these photos.

Devils Take the Lead

April 15, 2009 @ 10:36 PM ET

Why the Devils Won: Simply put, the Devils controlled the puck allowing plenty of offensive opportunities in the Canes' zone. Devils outshot the Canes 2:1. As serious as this time of year is, the Devils looked like all they were doing was having fun out on the ice, while the Canes looked like they were defeated midway through the second period. Devils played smart and managed to throw some new plays and moves out on the ice that hasn't been seen before. It apparently worked through the Canes incredible defense. It literally broke it down and allowed the Devils the win over Cam Ward.

Why the Hurricanes Lost: As amazing as the defense has been for the Canes, the Devils were able to tear it down when Mike Mottau scored from the blueline. After that, it sealed the Canes fate as they lost all momentum and practically handed the game over after putting up only a single goal. The Canes entered the playoffs without that same fierceness as they had displayed a few weeks ago that had many believing that the Canes were the scariest team in the league. They're not so scary anymore. Canes lacked the drive to win.

Key Moment: Devils defenseman Mike Mottau scores the first playoff goal in the series. After scoring only one goal in the regular season, Mottau set the tone for the game that Devils would dominate.

What's Next For Both Teams: With Brodeur rested and healthy, he has kicked his game up for the playoffs. It will be a difficult series for the Canes. Canes will need to find that fierce edge that made them so incredible in order to defeat the Devils. Without it, they have nothing.

'Canes vs. Devils, 2-1

April 17, 2009 @ 11:04 PM ET

Why Carolina won: There’s a difference between trying to start a Hurricane and playing goon hockey. What looked like a bunch of goons out on the ice ended up turning into a hurricane in overtime. Carolina controlled the puck and didn’t allow New Jersey possession in overtime. This was the first time Carolina decided to show up for a playoff game. The game was tight, and the series will continue that way. Carolina became more offensive as compared to Game 1 where the Devils outshot them 2:1. With 32 shots, the ‘Canes started to find that edge they lacked in Game 1.

Why the Devils lost: The Devils and Canes were evenly matched. They play the same game. The Canes had luck on their side in overtime when Tim Gleason scored the game winner. The Devils lost Captain Jamie Langenbrunner in the second period with an injury. Whether he will continue on to Carolina with the team on Saturday remains to be seen. Langenbrunner has meshed incredibly well with leading goal scorer Zach Parise and Travis Zajac all season. Brian Rolston will now have to step into his shoes and help the first line produce. Devils are going to need a whole lot of luck now.

Key Moment: Another great defensive move allowed for another defenseman to take the star moment in this series. Tim Gleason hadn’t scored a single goal in the regular season. His first goal of the 2008-2009 season was the game winner in overtime, making him the unsung hero. Coach Paul Maurice joked after the game that they told him not to score any goals during the regular season so that when the playoffs arrived he could score as many goals as he wanted.

What's next for both teams: If Carolina keeps storming the series with as much fierceness to blow the competition away then they will take it in 7. Statistical history shows that the Game 2 winner has a slightly higher chance of winning the series over the Game 1 winner. The series will be a tight one between both teams.
